about us

How we care for children

St. Philomena Iganga Babies' Home is a non-profit organization registered under the Ministry of Gender Labour and Social Development [MGLSD]. We help orphans and vulnerable children to be in families because every child deserves to be loved, safe, and have dignity.

Today we have 28 babies and children under our care (between one day old and 6 years old). Our goal is to help get these children and others be in safe and loving families.

St. Philomena Iganga Babies Home was started in 1954 to reduce the number of abandoned babies due to various factors, including poverty and violence in the homes.

Over the past 68 years, over 8,000 children have passed through St. Philomena.  Some have gone on to occupy important positions in society. Most, if not all, have found their place in the broader community, gainful employment, a trade, have founded a family.

WHAT WE DO

Changing the way we care

Children should be families and kinship care, not orphanages. Kids have the best chance to thrive when they grow up in a family.

That's why we're committed to strengthening families, and we shifting towards a family-based care model.
